As a followup to my article introducing constellations,

Astronomy site at Bellaonline

I've started work on what will be a series on individual constellations.

I was going to start with my favorite constellation, but decided I should begin with a summer one that you could see.

I'm not saying which is my favorite or which I'll be telling you about soon.

That's because I'd love to know what *your* favorite constellation is and why you like it. So please log on and tell all!

Oh, and can anyone guess what my favorite is?

Plieades is my favorite. I like the Native American myth about the seven sisters and the bears that chased them. They sat on a rock and the rock grew and took them up to the Heavens where they now sit in peace. The rock that the bears tried to climb is Devils Tower and you can still see the scratches in it when the bears slid back down.

I like your article, Mona.

The Pleiades. What a lovely choice, Phyllis. It's one of the most ancient and widely recognized star groupings, listed all the way back to Babylonian star catalogues of several thousand years ago. You can see it in the northern and southern hemispheres and many cultures have legends about it.

Although it's often called the Seven Sisters, most people can't see more than six stars without binoculars. Some myths even try to explain the missing seventh.

For a modern take on this, the logo of Japanese car makers Subaru (Japanese name for the Pleiades) has only six stars.

My favorite is Scorpius. It looks like what it is supposed to be, and I like the way it crawls over the southern horizon in summer.
