A harvest moon is the full moon nearest the autumnal equinox. In the fall, there is a narrow angle between the ecliptic and the horizon. For this reason, the moon rises about 30 minutes later on several successive night. Normally it rises about 50 minutes later each night. Farmers used to use this extra moonshine to get their crops in.
