To all,

When I went to Mc Donalds for my reading with a good cup of coffee, there were 2 families of Muslims sitting dowm.I stopped, and like I always do, said Salem Malechum. You should have seen the smiles on their faces. We spoke for about 15 minutes, them asking me about Buddhism and how come Buddhists
seemed so calm.We spoke of respect ,of brotherly love, living all on the same planet etc. That we were all brothers, with different beleifs.

What I love about Buddhism is that it gives me an opening on all religions, all phylosophies and all kinds of spirituality.

May your spirituality, bring you all to that respect.

A simple Buddhist named

That is wonderful, Loong. I respect those of all faiths and beliefs, as I do believe that every one of us is capable of love and goodness. As much as there may be differences among us, there are also many similarities among all people. Indeed we are all brothers and sisters.

Dear Jilly -

I think this is

Shalom aleikhem

which in Hebrew means "peace be upon you"

and then the other person says

aleikhem shalom

which in Hebrew means "upon you be peace".

A lovely sentiment.

Dear Loong -

I would hope that all religions have at their root a concept of brotherly love and compassion for others. Certainly we can agree that certain specific modern variants have strayed to become more exclusionary, but if we look at the foundations of just about any religion they are about loving thy neighbor, caring for the weak, and doing what's right.

So certainly Buddhism is one of them, but it's a concept that is followed by many different faiths out there.

Interesting! I thought malechum sounded Hebrew. Do Muslim people understand Hebrew?

Hello all,

The spelling may differ amongst users and nations but generally the Muslim greeting is

As-Salaam `Alaykum

- which means 'Peace be upon you' and the other person responds

Wa Alaykum Asalaam

which means And peace be upon you also.

As far as I understand this is not connected to the Hebrew/Jewish "Shalom" even if the the meanings are the same/similar.

JYI (Just for Your Interest) if you happen to meet a Zimbabwean in one of your high streets, here is the greeting you can use! He/she would be astonished I bet...

Smile and say 'Mangwanani' (mang - gwa - na - nee) Good Morning!

They are likely to answer

Mangwanani, Makasimba Here? (mak-a-simba-hair-rare)

which means 'Are you strong?"

You should then say:

Ndakasimba akasimba wo (Nda-ka-simba-wak-a-simba woe)

which means 'I am strong if you are strong'

and you finish off the greeting by saying

'Ndakasimba' which means 'Yes, I am strong'.

Ah well, see, the feelings are international. We are each as strong as the other so we all have to keep on working to heal the world! It was John Donne who wrote 'No man is an island...'

Cheers

Loong, you are a good human being as much as I read your posts. You respect all the religions as we all are brothers and sisters. Lestie, thanks for explaining the right and detailed meaning of Salaam Alaykum and Alaykum Asalaam.

Lestie, i like that - I am strong if you are strong! Cool.

Loong, when i find myself writing a long post, I try to remember to do a Select All and Copy at some point. It's just smart foruming, in case something you are really working on gets lost. smile
