It is a German Idiom - 'Alles in gruenen bereich', (everything in the green area), and heard almost every day throughout the country, but not describing a space in various shades of green, simply that 'everything is under control'.
It is just one of many commonly used German expressions which are sometimes bizarre, but fun to know and have shaped the language.

Direct word-for-word translations into English are always interesting. No matter what language it is. I'm sure it's the same going the other way.
Very cute article.

My thanks Beetle........glad you enjoyed it, and yes you are right, it can be just as complicated the other way around, have found that out from experience
Did you happen to hear any of these phrases when you were in Austria and Germany?
Mind you there is so much going on as far as noise goes around November/December when you were there, with all the traditional music and just general seasonal things, it is sometimes hard to actually hear anything clearly even if you are standing next to someone.

I like "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree." That was one of the first I learned in German language class.

Sorry, I can't recall any. But then I may have picked up a word or two but never put into the phrase or understood the connection.

Wonderful article Francine. Love the one about the crumble has to be quiet while the cake is talking - will try it on my nieces and nephews...
