I would think the skills of a desktop publisher would translate into both print and online media.

Not if they know how to adapt and conform with the changes in technology. There's no need and no reason to stagnate and not learn new skills along the way. Also, there are fundamental skills in desktop publishing that can be applied in other scenarios as well, even those that make use of the advanced gadgets there are nowadays.
