My hair is thinning. I can cover the greys but I can't add strands without surgery or treatments!

When does the thinning really start to show? Have you always had thin hair or is this recent?

There are some new hair dyes that have a 'shiny' component to them. Anyone try one of those? I wonder if it would make my hair look and feel younger. I have to dye it anyway.

My hair has always been on the fine side while my sisters were blessed with thick strands. To make things worse, the years of stress have taken a toll on my scalp, I'm afraid. Hairstylists say that it isn't too bad but they encourage me to use some nioxin-based shampoos or Rogain-type products. I haven't as yet.

Haven't tried those shiny dyes. Don't think I've seen any. What are the brand names?

I've only seen the shiny dyes at salons. I don't know if you can buy them OTC. lol

Dan used rogain for a while. It worked but made his head itchy. I don't think it does that for everyone. Maybe it was just hair growing back in.

Ladies:

I am told that as we age, we have to be careful about the chemicals we use. Trust me, I am only trying not to stress out over any hair that is left in my comb after using it(lol).

Cannot do the wig thing so working on ways to keep what hair I do have at age 53. Thinning hair can be genetic or from the lifestyle we live.

Lori, I definitely feel your pain on the thinning part. My mom and sisters have beautiful hair, mine - never, hard brittle and now thinning around the top, but it grows well in the back of my head.

I am pretty careful with my hair. I don't wash it every day, don't use styling products and don't blow it dry or hot iron it. I pretty much also wear a hat anytime I am outside. I also use a boars bristle brush.

I do fill up my hairbrush with hairs but so far I seem to have a lot of it.

I decided I could not stand the greys anymore. I dyed the whole head a very shiny medium brown. So much better!

Darn. I hadf a permanent color put in but the greys are showing through now. WTF? What should I do?
