Their original inspiration was an Emperor's love of meat covered with gold leaf. Germanys Schnitzel are thin breaded cutlets, delicious, simple to make, and in all their variations of meat and sauces are one of Germanys favorite meals.

Hey Francine,

Went and blew my diet plans and bought some of the stuff my kitchen needed to follow your recipe. The kitchen is very involved in these decisions don't you know!

I love this dish with sweet german mustard, dill pickles and a good potato salad made with a vinaigrette rather than mayonnaise based sauce.

Your article was most enticing, thankyou!

Cheers

Byzantium? Never knew that simple fact! Tut.

OMGosh! I should never read your recipe articles at 1:30 AM, Francine. This makes me so hungry!!!

Great article on the history and recipe. This is very similar to what we call 'Chicken Fried Steak'. This is not chicken, but a beef cutlet, coated as in your recipe, then fried like chicken. Served with mashed potatoes and country gravy, it makes an awesome and delicious meal -- one of my favorites.

I also prepare pork cutlets in the same manner.

I love your recipe and will give it a try. Thank you! smile

Still find it fun to think of you reading away in the middle of the night Phyllis, while over here I am gulping down my first early morning 'wake up' coffee.

Had never even heard of Chicken Fried Steak, and am not really the world's biggest meat eater, but am definitely going to try that out this weekend, it sounds delicious with the gravy and mashed potatoes. I love gravy, and mash, oh dear it will be 'ignore the calories' time. Thanks for telling me about something new again. smile

Gosh yes Lestie, if you can find sweet German mustard where you are, and real dill pickles, then that is another perfect mixture. Often put a spoonful of sweet mustard, especially one with seeds, in the warm potato salad recipe which is in the article. Prefer a mayonaise free potato salad like you..........but then I eat far too much.

Is there German food to be found in the average supermarket, or are there specialty shops around because Namibia is a neighbor?

Had to laugh at the thought of your kitchen being involved in your cooking decisions, know the feeling. In the days when I did masses of cooking it seemed to me that the kitchen was taken over by spices and 'things', but whenever I thought of making something it was always necessary to rush out and buy yet another ingredient. crazy

Schnitzel sure is awesome, Gemineye. All of Francine's recipes are awesome!

Francine, I fixed some for dinner earlier and put it on an onion roll -- it tasted so good!

Hello Francine and all,

Unfortunately the answer to your question is yes! We have a thriving German community here in Johannesburg (in S A as a whole) and of course Namibia. The indiginous Namiban Herero peoples still wear traditional dress to go shopping in Windhoek there which was and is still very strongly influenced by the early German history and modern day community. Much of the architecture there is too beautiful to see and if you are to live in Namibia, it is wise to be German speaking or learn German. It just makes sense, though several other languages are heard all over.

Back to Joeys where I stay, there are delicatessens that specialise in german fare, speciality restaurants, butcheries, food suppliers, kellers where german beer abounds.

We have the International German School (excellent reputation), annual German fete and markets, our own Beer Festivals along with other celebrations. Sausages, takeaways, eisbein etc. all v v popular on menus and these are not the diet versions! Imported Christmas decorations, hobbies and crafts v popular, The Goethe Institut is very active too with all sorts of events. Yep, it is very easy to be German in South Africa, especially if you are on contract and missing 'home'

I am a fan for sure so you see just how interesting your article was and is Francine ... oh yes, my kitchen is smiling.

Cheers now
