http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art42930.asp It finally hit home tongiht that I am quite possibly losing part of my hearing. As a visually impaired person for most of my life, that terrifies me. (Well, terrifies may be a little strongly worded ...) I depend on my hearing so much! But here lately, I've been saying 'huh?' and 'what?' a lot more than my normal scatter-brained character requires. I've just written an article about hearing loss, and that section with all the 'yes'/'no' questions about hearing loss was an eye opener. And then, tonight wil we were bowling, it became pretty obvious. And yes, those of us with really sorry eyesight bowl. We use really good 'navigators' to tell us what's left in what spot after we roll the first ball. (I use my seeing-eye-husband.) But with the racket of the alley, the 950000000 kids next to us and his low voice ... Well, it was tough. So, fueled by this evening and the article I wrote for bellaonline, I'm going to my doc and request a hearing check. I'd like to invite others of you to read the article and then, if appropriate, join me. Hearing is really important. Really important! Let me know how it goes with you.

Yes, I've been severely deaf since very early childhood if not since birth (we don't really know since babies weren't tested for deafness in the 1960s and the speech therapist spotted it when I was two) and I always advise people to have a hearing test via their family doctor or GP if they're at all worried about their hearing. It does take time to adjust to new levels of hearing and we have a specialist deafness site here at BellaOnline if you have questions.

I wear two bone anchored hearing aids (BAHA's), just for information smile

Thank you for that. I know that about 25 years ago I worried about it and had the audiologist at work check it. She said the hearing was fine, but that I'd probably had another VISION loss. Stunned, I asked her what that had to do with anything. She explained that even fully hearing people do a bit of lip reading, anticipation of words from facial expressions, body language, etc. and that I wasn't getting that input anymore. The result? I thought I'd lost hearing. This time, though ... Pretty sure it's hearing. I'm going to make the appointment this week and hopefully have an answer by next. Thank you for your encouragement.
