There are three constellations named for dogs, but what about cats in the sky? There is astrocat Felicette who went into space and returned safely to Earth, but also constellations of big cats and a pawprint 50 light years across.

Glad you liked the article, Jilly. I enjoyed writing it, fun bringing all the different objects together.

I'm not really sold on the Cat's Eye Nebula as a cat's eye. Yet I'm not so sure it looks any more like the Eye of Sauron. But I'm not the only one who fancies the Helix Nebula as the Eye of Sauron. It's an infrared picture taken by the Spitzer Space Telescope.

The two stars at the end of Scorpius the scorpion's tail are Shaula and Lesath. They are called the "cat's eyes."

Are there cosmic cats light years across in interstellar space? Do astronomers have to hire a specialist to remove them from their images? Have a look at this short video and make up your own mind! ;-)

Space Cats : video

A winning combination for me -- gorgeous pictures of space . . . with cats. My favorite is the kitten playing with Jupiter's moon Io.
