It's the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Dickens. There will be lots of activities going on in his birthplace and in London this year, Olympics notwithstanding. And events worldwide as his books still have a wide fanbase.

The Google doodle celebrates many of his literary creations.

Who could forget Carton's sacrifice and redemption at the end of A Tale of Two Cities? "It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to than I have ever known."

What's your favorite Dickens?

I'm a bit over-Dickensed at the moment as he was born in Portsmouth , the city where I live and work. So he's being milked for every syllable he ever wrote. You can't turn a corner in Old Portsmouth without running into re-enactors, TV crews, and local radio presenters. Especially as today as you can imagine. So will have to get back to you when it all dies down a bit.

Things can be overdone and then all the enjoyment is worn out. I like some of his books but sometimes they are long and drawn out. I thought Bleak House was amazing - on and on and on just like lawsuits today - lawyers keep the cases in court as long as they can draw a big salary from the estate or case. When the money runs out the case is settled.
