Phyllis that is just awful. Somehow, when it happens in a culture where girls are basically just not wanted, although it is not easier to understand, as horrifying as it is one just knows that to a certain extent it happens. And has happened for centuries.
When it takes place in our own society then it takes on a whole extra meaning.
Did anyone ever find out why the woman did this? Did she just not want a daughter or was there another reason?
It happens here also of course, even though in many European countries there are special places in towns, especially hospitals and churches, where unwanted children, babies mostly, can be secretly placed.
The act of placing them in the little 'Baby Box' sounds some type of alarm and the child is collected virtually at once, just having given the person leaving it time to 'escape'. For desperate people, the majority are mothers, this is at least a way out.
