You don't need to throw away your neti pot if you've read about the two recent deaths linked to the nasal irrigation device. It turns out the individuals who died were using tap water that contained brain-eating amoebas. Probably best not to use tap water. Also, make sure you are following carefully the instructions that came with your neti pot. I know after hearing of these deaths I stopped slacking off on not rinsing and air drying my nasal irrigator. My family loves our neti pots. Thanks for this cautionary and informative article. I hadn't heard this before. Good info to know! I typically use distilled water, but have used bottled water before. We each have our own pots and I wipe them off with rubbing alcohol after each use.

I clicked on the link because I had read an article in the local paper about neti the other day, so it was timely as the article had got me thinking about getting a neti pot - thank you.
