I think one of the myths is that an ADD person can't sit still.

That's true. Some folks with ADD are just inattentive. They don't have that bouncing off the walls vibe going on! Unfortunately, the inattention is worse for kids' learning in school. The inattentive kids don't get as much attention or interventions, since they aren't usually a problem to others.

Sad but true... that old saying about "squeaky wheels get the grease." The quickest way to get help is to cause chaos around yourself.

Too true! A diagnosis just gives a person a starting place. Thanks for your insight.

Dealing with the negative symptoms of ADD can be a lifetime challenge. However, when you are able to lower the effects of the negative symptoms, you can bring out the effects of the mirror traits.

A mirror trait is one that mirrors the negative symptom, but they have more of a positive effect on your life.

negative=* don't do a task the way it was presented
mirror=* creative problem solver

negative=* problems staying on task
mirror=*ability to multi-task

negative=* perseverates
mirror=* persistent

One of the myths is that people with ADD can't be successful. My son's first psychologist has ADHD. His chair was on rollers, and he scooted all over that room! If he couldn't move, I think that he would have imploded!

He is a well respected doctor, and is in demand. ADD/ADHD does not have to limit you. It just gives you a bit of a different tool set.

One of the myths that some of my students believe is that kids with ADD/ADHD can't cope with college. That's absolutely not true!
