Tuesday, December 27, was the 440th anniversary of the birth of Johannes Kepler. In celebration, here is a new article about his life.

Johannes Kepler gave the first accurate description of the Solar System. As he did his work, he struggled with poverty, insecurity and bereavement in troubled times. Religion and warfare were tearing Europe apart, but Kepler never gave up his quest to understand the cosmos.

Loved the article Mona, Johannes Kepler really was a fascinating and complex person, as well as obviously being more than averagely intelligent. Despite his sometimes chaotic circumstances he achieved so much in his lifetime.

Going back to our astrological effects of eclipses, of which I must admit I have had no experience whatever, Kepler was an astronomer who also believed in astrology which was/is unusual. In Germany one of the things that he is known for is that he thought there was a definite relationship between what happened in the heavens and on earth, so did masses of research into proving planetary configurations affected humans as well as the earths weather.

Have always found the fact that he thought out of the box to that extent to be another interesting side of the man, but of course the verdict is still out on whether the Three Wise Men, whose 'day' it is in a week or so, were astrologers or astronomers. A mixture of both seems to go with the territory sometimes.

In Kepler's day, it wasn't unusual for astronomy and astrology to be paired. A number of well known astronomers, such as Cassini, also cast horoscopes - though Cassini went on to repudiate astrology.

Apparently astronomy & astrology were part of mathematics in Kepler's time. So as official mathematician to nobles (and the Holy Roman Emperor) one of Kepler's duties was astrological advice. Seems likely that he did as well as he did in this respect more by common sense than looking at the planets.

Kepler's work - consolidated by Newton, who dabbled in alchemy, as did Tycho Brahe - probably did more than anything to divorce astronomy and astrology.

All very interesting stuff.
