One of my friends, another editor at BellaOnline, wants me to publish my book through Amazon. She feels that there is important information to help families who have kids with ADD. The book is designed to help children with ADD to be more successful in school. As I thought about this, I started considering the holidays and their effects on families where there are children of school age.

Holidays can be wonderful, but they are inherently stressful, especially if you have children with ADD. Keeping a good schedule for the youngsters with ADD is important. Here are simple tips for making the holidays better for everybody.

This is the editor that wants Connie to publish her book. Holidays are so stressful when there is children and adults with ADD/HD. Every year I have expectations of a happy fun-filled Christmas (like when I was a child) but every year when my kids were little, and now with grand children (and their parents) who all have ADD/HD I am still hopeful, but it always turns into a very stressful situation. The parents scream, the children cry...they need help, they need to recognize they need help. That is why Connie's book would be an inspiration for so many people!

It really does help kids to have a routine at home over the holidays. They feel more secure. Also, when they aren't just allowed to sit in front of the tv, computer, or video game, it helps them do more and keep a more pleasant personality. You do have to make it clear right up front.

If the video game wars have already started, it's perfectly fine to say, "You've had 2 days of nothing but video games. You have one more day like that. After that, you may choose which (choose your time limit-example 2 hours) 2 hours you want to play. That will be all for the day." You must find a way to follow through; that might mean putting controllers or games in the car trunk-whatever it takes. Then, you need to have good alternatives to the games.

I'm not saying that it's easy. But after they get used to it, things are a lot more pleasant.

Hi Connie,

Really enjoyed and appreciated your article. Thought that the "med holiday" for some kids under controlled circumstances was a wonderful idea as it could be a gigantic stepping stone to being perhaps weaned off of medications. Ernest Hemmingway would have seconded your marvelous idea about modeling "grace under pressure." Many of your suggestions that dealt with STRUCTURE STRUCTURE STRUCTURE could be positively generalized to the mainstream population of children as well.

Thanks Les. Some doctors encourage med holidays. I think it depends on what the effect is on kids and their families. At our house, we weren't too crazy about med holidays. Some kids do well with them.

Structure does help most kids a lot!
