Some people have managed to pare down their possessions to 100 things. I don't even know how this is possible. I have hundreds of books alone.

I suppose one can move all their books to kindle. What do you think?

Clothes...camping gear...office supplies...food (maybe you don't count food)...gardening/workshop/car supplies?

Kid stuff???

Are we assuming this kind of person is a single, childless person who doesn't work at home? My mind boggles at attempting this. smile

My brother who did this was single as childless. Although he did work from home :)

I have been thinking about this all evening. I am going to start counting some stuff. Caveat - I am childfree and work at home. smile

kitchen -
corkscrew
can opener
bread knife
chef knife
two mugs
two wine glasses
hand grinder
mortar and pestle
dehydrator
toaster
coffeepot
travel mug
plastic bowl
measuring cup
measuring spoons
wooden spoon
spatula
hand dishwashing implements - soap/scrubby/drying rack/gloves
dish towels
misc tupperware bowls
2 plates
one ramekin
one serving plate
dorm-sized fridge
hot plate
misc eating utensils
food shears
2 pots, 2 pans
colander
task light
small handful of cookbooks
microwave
compost bucket
recycling bin
cleansers and cleaning supplies for the kitchen
water filter

I am not including food - i figure that can't count. And as one can see, i have a very limited kitchen. No stove, blender, specialty appliances, and very little cooking. This is already over 50 items! Some of these things could be cut - i could have one knife, no serving plate or ramekin or colander, one pot and one pan...I could try to only buy twist off wine bottles and lose the corkscrew...

So, yes, this is just the kitchen and i've used up half the alloted 100 items. Hmmm.

We are in the process of getting rid of all of our books and going digital. Generally if I want to read a book I get it from the library, or buy it, read it and then sell it. So the books we have never move.

I now look at the stuff in my house and ask if I really want it. If I don't, it leaves the house.

Maybe I need to think about 100 things in a different way. What if i had no more than 100 things per room? Kitchen, bathroom, office, bedroom, living area?

Of course for me that's all still in 150 square feet plus storage areas. But I can start with looking at things in roomlike categories.

Anyone else hear of the 100 Things movement? Do you think you can do it?

As simple and stress-free as I think it would be, I can't imagine at this stage in my life living with just. The thought of having to go through everything I currently have is actually overwhelming haha.

I am there with you. Overwhelming doesn't begin to describe it, if I actually had to do this right now. It's a fun forum topic though.

As overwhelming as it seems, the alternative it to leave it for someone else to deal with after you have gone.

And then there's accessories. Jewelry, belts, scarves, bags, shoes, socks, bras. If you think about it, there are so many sub topics of things that just add up.

It's amazing how much stuff we have, and not in a good way.

I guess one can start small, and pick out, say, your five favorite scarves. Five favorite hair ties. Five ball caps.

Let's see if I can actually do something like this.
