How would a woman know when it is necessary to take the Plan B pill if she is already on birth control? There is no sure way to know it is necessary. Plan B is solely intended to prevent unwanted pregnancies after a failure of or lack of birth control within 72 hours of unprotected sex. There is no way to know that you would or would not have needed it.
Is it recommended that she take one after each unprotected encounter in addition to her normal form of birth control? Plan B is intended for one time use, in replacement of your normal form of birth control. Once you have used Plan B, you resume your old method, immediately.
Have there been any studies on birth defect risks when women are ready to have a family?Yes. To date there is no medical evidence of risk to future family planning or pregnancy as a result of using Plan B.
