Are you a Marmite lover or a Marmite hater? Or do you live in an area of the world where Marmite is not a staple product, in which case you may never have tried it...

You either love it or hate it is a classic slogan associated with Marmite, a spread which has held the English nation captive for over a century. The strong, salty taste means that people react strongly on the love-hate spectrum when they first experience Marmite. I am a Marmite lover, and proud of it. Find out more about Marmite origins, history and some suggestions for perfect Marmite moments...

Marmite - You Either Love It Or Hate It

I would love to hear your views on Marmite, and any suggestions you have for favourite Marmite reciipes lovers

Just love Marmite Asha, and you timed this article so well with the Marmite spill on the M1 in England on Monday evening.

Marmite spill causes 'Jam' on the M1

If I had been anywhere near that would have been there with my spoon at once.

Buy Marmite here whenever possible, at a vast 'mark-up', and spread it on crip bread............just delicious, can eat a whole packet of Ryvita or Wasa Brot at one sitting if some Marmite is available.

Fun and interesting article Asha, thanks.

Marmite. Ugh. Hate it. Pity about the mess on the road, but otherwise thought dumping all the Marmite was a good move.

Well we have just proved a point I think Mona, it really is a case of 'Love it or Hate it'. laugh

And what a relief to know you would not be one of those I would have had to fight off with my spoon on the M1. smile

No indeed. I would, in fact, gladly let you have my spoon as well so that you could dig with both hands!

Marmite used to be found in Safeway Jilly, does that still exist there because if it does perhaps it will be lurking on a shelf somewhere, as well as in specialist super markets, or Indian stores because they nearly always carry a lot of British goodies, but it is also available online..through Amazon.com for example, but of course it does cost an arm and a leg as we say here.

The mixture was invented in Germany by Justus Liebig a chemist who discovered brewers yeast could be made into a concentrate with a sort of meaty flavor, but it never really 'caught on' and was first made commercially in Britain, and although versions similar to Liebigs are still on sale, especially in Health Food shops, they just dont have the same zing somehow.

A bit like Australias Vegemite, which is delicious in its own way but not known as the Pepsi of the yeast extract world for nothing.

Of course as a marmite is a French cooking pot, like the picture on the front of the jar, the French, who stock jars of Marmite in the exotic foods section of super markets, say that is where the name originated, from a French soup, Petite Marmite, so one way or another although it could not be more 'British' it is thoroughly European.

Hope you find some Marmite soon Jilly
smile

Jilly if you click on the Marmite pot at the bottom of the article it will take you through to Marmite you can buy on Amazon.com.

Wikipedia has this to offer about US availability in stores:

In the United States, UK marmite can also be purchased in most CUB food stores, the international aisle of Kroger supermarkets, and some QFC supermarkets, where it is found in the baking section.

I don't want to spoil the marmite party but...it is basically yeast! Candida, anyone? cry

Marmite makes me ill.

In terms of taste, my sons both love it. It was all my elder son would take to school (on sandwiches) when he was a little boy. The 'dinner ladies' told me he should take 'school dinners' as marmite 'butties' were all he would eat. I had to put him back on the butties (as it were) as apparently he then sat at the school dinner table and wouldn't eat at all!

Luckily he has a varied diet now, but he still loves Marmite. As he gets lots of migraines and it is very salty, I try to keep his Marmite consumption down as I'm sure it is not good for him.

It is Brewer's Yeast though Eileen, which is known to be a rich source of all types of important minerals, as well as B-complex vitamins, and it's been used for years as a nutritional supplement in all types of situations.

One of my sons loves it but I have the impression that his brother would rather starve than eat it.

Well if only we had been somewhere near the overturned Marmite lorry on the M1, then I would definitely have taken up Mona's offer to borrow her spoon.
