Indians have learnt to find a use for every part of palm trees, making them one of the most useful trees. Though not native to India, the Asian Palmyra Tree, Borassus flabellifer flourishes on the Indian Sub continent. Read more about palm trees in India here.

Indians have always been very resourceful people --- I remember how fascinated my sisters & I were as kids whenever we visited India.

The servants would use the actual coconut shell as a container for soap & the coconut husk/fibers as an abrasive "brillo" pad for scrubbing pots! Nothing ever gets wasted in India, they have always been recycling & "green" for decades :-) We would stand there for hours watching them scrub pots & pans!

Old newspapers & brown bags were always used as book covers or wrapping paper. We used to eat off of banana leaves at weddings & celebrations!

I need to go back for a visit soon, missing my India!

I love the palm tree too. I moved into a small Indian town a year ago and i see palm trees everywhere. I grew up in a city and I was fascinated how people in rural India use natural products. There is a shop here in the local market where i can get palm leaf mats, baskets, boxes, hats and a whole lot of 'green' stuff. I enjoy using these. In Indian villages people are so much more resourceful and they just don't waste anything.
