I missed this earlier this year, but an australian company has tested the first beer designed for space on a parabolic flight. For short periods it mimics weightlessness in space. It's called Vostok [after Yuri Gagarin's craft] 4 Pines Stout Space Beer.

I admit that I'm not a beer drinker, but can see the point that if someone really builds a space hotel, surely it would have a space bar. What would be an appropriate nibble to go with it? A bowl of nuts is out, as they'd be all over the place!

It's nice to know that microgravity does not impair the swallowing process. They did have to design this beer so that wet burps were not a problem, so the carbonation level is greatly reduced compared to Earth Beer.

Astronauts suffer from head congestion from weightlessness, which dulls their senses of taste and smell. Hot and spicy foods help to clear head congestion, and beer goes well with spicy foods. Lots of foods can be packaged and kept at room temperature now, so almost anything that can be packaged this way will work, including sushi, beef jerky, and kimchi. Sounds like a gourmet's dream.

Interesting article Carolyn. Something I'm sure not many people have thought of.

They tested the beer the last year on a parbolic flight - and no wet burps! Here's some footage of the flight Test flight for Vostok beer

Jilly, they do sell their prize-winning beer on Earth, but it looks like you'd need a friend in Australia.

It's also not exactly the same beer that is used on the space flight. The one they tested on the parabolic flights had a bit less carbonation, but it sure is fun watching the parties and celebrations that surround the beer. It's made by a craft brewery who takes pride in their beer. It's not just a gimmick, and I like that.

When we all have $200,000 for a 20 minute space flight, we can try it. I'd love to hear your reviews! LOL!

I just thought of one more thing. The "tester" had a hard time shaking the beer into his mouth because beer doesn't flow or have surface tension in 0 gravity conditions. They need to design a better vessel for the beer. There's a project for you!

Here's my take on the subject:

Space Beer - Light Beer at Zero Gravity

All I know is, I'd love to try it at 0 G's!

I want to visit a space bar and drink space beer...can't shake the idea...maybe they can design it like the bar in Mos Eisley, with a cantina band and a nice Saturn Stout.

I wonder how you can tell if you're drunk. In weightlessness, it's not like anyone can ask you to walk on the white line or stand on one foot for balance. LOL!
