Like you I loved this film Amy. The casting was perfect, while the actors were not only excellent but of course also stunning, as with virtually all the Bollywood movie stars that appear in the Hindi-language film industrys movies.
It had a dont want to miss a minute story line with twists and turns, memorable songs and incredible dance sets, the feel good atmosphere, in fact the whole production, was worth every one of those almost three hours, and then what a great ending.
Have now seen it twice, once in Hindu with English subtitles and also in German where it lost nothing in translation. Would see it again if there is ever the time available, and it is not really surprising that it won so many awards.
These films are being exported all over the world nowadays, and apparently that is one reason why the Indian English you mention is being used in the dialogue and songs, it is sometimes known as 'Hinglish', so like Germany and its 'Denglish'.
Feel the Bollywood genre is undervalued, because for escapism, romance, colour spectacle, talent and just plain enjoyment factor, many of the movies produced in India are hard to beat. And somehow the Stars, like Shahrukh Khan and Kajol in this film, still seem to have that elusive star factor.
True to life? No not very often, but for a few hours of getting away from it all, hard to beat.
