With Halloween and earlier evenings coming up, I wanted to touch base with you about safeguarding our precious kids who have ADD.

Kids with ADD are impulsive, creative, energetic, and will persist in trying to solve puzzles that they are interested in. This can be a good thing, unless they are putting themselves in danger. Limit the dangerous situations that your child can find himself in.

Weekends are the times when the structures that hold our lives together loosen a bit. We relax. This can be a time of danger for a small and active child.

It is also a time of danger for teens. Weekends often bring new freedoms. Talk to your kids about safety.

Take a moment to talk with your kids about safety. Read the article together and discuss it. Ask your children about other situations that could be dangerous in their lives. You might be surprised.

Talk with your kids about school bus safety. Years ago, one of my students impulsively ran in front of the school bus. The bus did not see him, and he had permanent injuries from his encounter with the school bus.

Kids must ALWAYS make eye contact with the bus driver BEFORE walking in front of the bus.

My son did some very impulsive things. One day he was sawing some logs he hit his arm then sawed over it three more times and laughed. I had him to many specialists across the nation. Sometimes the answers just aren't there. Maybe that is why God took him early. More unanswered questions.

Diana, I am so deeply sorry about the loss of your son at an early age. Life is full of unanswered questions, but this must be a huge one.
