Here's a wonderful piece from the NY Times by Amy Julia Becker, author of
A Good and Perfect Gift:
Faith, Expectations, and a Little Girl Named Penny

New York Times: Has Down Syndrome Hurt Us?

...for a while, when I told Pennys story, I left out one
crucial detail. I didnt tell her what happened two hours
after she was born, when a nurse called my husband out
of the room and he returned with wet eyes and a sentence
I couldnt comprehend: They think Penny has Down syndrome.

Earlier this year Penny and I were alone as I retold the story
again, and I decided it was time to let her know that the day
of her birth hadnt been all rejoicing and ecstasy. I got to the
end of the familiar narrative and I added, After you were born,
I was scared, because the doctors told us you had Down syndrome.

I did not realize that there would be such a strong negative response to Amy Julia Becker's New York Times Motherlode column because she shared her perspective on prenatal testing. Not only were there many comments that attacked her personal viewpoint and her experience raising her daughter, but dozens of people 'recommend' those comments and very few 'recommend' comments made by those who were touched by and heartily agree with her sentiments and experience.

"Thanks to those who have already read and passed along
this @NYTMotherlode post of mine.
