Mike Mahler describes how he loves to teach and help people. So many self-help books are overly positive, and it is impossible to be positive all the time. The book describes how to use your own negativity to get your life in gear before it too late.

I have been afraid of reading this one, since i find kick-in-the-pants type of advice repellent. I am not sure why some people (like my hubby) find that kind of thing encouraging? It makes me feel shut down.

Thoughts?

Well, ever since I was a kid, I was a dreamer and a thinker rather than a doer... " Face Reality " Is all I heard. You ask too many questions, you're too serious was another. ok, fine. Power, money, prestige, pretty girls... then what? We all have to relinquish that someday. The reason it goes against your grain is that "you need a kick in the shorts before it's too late" is the heart-hurting philosophy that claims and affirms that life ends when the physical body is no longer here. It does not. In the chronology of the Hindus, one day of Brahma is said to be Four Billion, Three Hundred and Twenty Million Years. We just went through the first half, now we're going through the second half. " Make your mark in the world before you die " is the human ego spouting it's arrogance of separateness. Spirit says otherwise.

A more appropriate title to explore may be: The Collapse of Time: Confessions of a Quantum Humanist

I just loved this book. For me, it described everything I am, scared to progress, more comfortable in the same situation. Maybe because I am older? I don't know, sometimes, I am so cautious, I get afraid to do anything for fear it will turn out wrong. This book just validated many thoughts for me.

What is older? I am 43. I guess that is mid-life in these days.

For me, shaking up my entire life and starting fresh is old hat. I can't count how many times I have done that. Student, wilderness guide, science tutor, dog groomer, staff reporter and photographer, marketing director for an orchestra, guide for the disabled, freelance writer, magazine editor, book author, naturalist, radio DJ...

So when people tell me to stop being comfortable, i kind of freak out. I NEED comfort. I think I have PSTD from all the change, plus moving over 100 times, living in an RV, living in the back of my pickup, starting over and over and over in different states and careers my entire adult life.

So maybe it's just me that finds this kind of advice condescending?

I know lots of people like the 'harsh truths' sort of advice. But it just irritates me. smile

I agree with you, I freak out also when I get out of my comfort zone. I still liked the book, because it gave me a kick in the pants. Older? I don't know, I guess 53 is older, like me.
