Tricky one, Rebecca. Guess it depends on the definition of the United States of America. The First Continental Congress first met in Philadelphia, but didn't declare the USA until they'd got some other business out of the way first, like declaring independence and that sort of thing.

But if we say the country really existed when the Constitution was ratified, the first capital under the the Constitution was in New York City.

And it did lots of moving around before and after that!

I know it's not District of Columbia (I'm there, right now). I'm guessing this is a question that means to fully read the inquiry...

Before the Constitution established the U.S.A., Philadelphia was the site of the 1st Continental Congress. Under the Constitution declaring the nation as 'United States of America', it was New York.

Prior to the Constitution and as a union of united colony states, there was the Continental Congress (CC) meeting sites (1stCC in Phildelphia & 2ndCC in Baltimore/various Pennsylvania cities) & the capital that was established by the Articles of Confederation (Philly)

Francine - your post is a little scary. smile

The political / economic situation you described reads a lot like what's happening in the US today. Thank you for bringing those similarities to my attention. I'm going to be paying a lot closer attention to politics now. Ugh!

What are the only times that the USA has had its land occupied by a foreign enemy? I stress the USA.

Dont think you mean when thousands of Japanese and German Americans were put into internment camps throughout the USA during WWII as potential enemies Rebecca, so is it perhaps when the Japanese tried invading the USA via first the island of Guam which they occupied in 1941, and then the Aleutian Islands, between June 42 to August 43.

While of course the White House is the White House because the British captured and burned Washington, DC in 1814 after having tried, and failed, to bring about an independent Native Indian State in the Midwest.

Whereas after the Constitution made the USA, many US Territories or Colony states have been occupied and the British only plundered during the War of 1812...

I'd have to say that the USA has not had land occupied by a foreign enemy.

I can agree that it is conceivable to accept that the Japanesse in the Aleutians and the short stay by the British to burn down DC can be considered as such.

I think Francine is right. The Japanese occupied Guam and the Aleutians.

There were incursions by British troops onto US territory during the War of 1812. I'm not sure which of the shifting boundaries counted as occupation - or even where the boundaries were then.

Embassies are considered sovereign properties/lands of the residing nation. Doesn't this make the Iranian hostage situation meet the criteria of an occupation by an enemy on US lands?
