Hi Connie, Yes I shop at Aldi , it is a German business, and there is another cost cutting German company called Lidl, dont know if you have their stores as well. They are all over Europe.
Did not always use them but do so often now. About five years ago there was a cookery television programme where folks were given an open budget and the choice of six types of store to shop for the ingredients for the same meal and recipes.
The stores ranged from high end gourmet to Aldi and Lidl.
When the meals were cooked, and from a blind tasting made by many people, no one could tell the difference in the ingredients.
Some things from Aldi and Lidl, such as the fresh fruit and cheese were in many cases actually better.
The gourmet store, with its wood paneling and assistants in cute outfits, cost in some instances five to six times as much for produce that was no better.
This type of blind tasting and cost comparison for quality has been done many times since then, and it is basically always positive. Of course if one is looking for named goods, then Aldi is not the place to go.
Brie is easy to freeze when it is on offer, the texture will change a little but the taste wont.
It just needs to be wrapped tightly and thoroughly in freezer wrap, which is about three times the size of the piece of cheese, to make sure there is no chance of it being exposed to the air.
Then put the wrapped cheese into a freezer storage bag, can be with other wrapped items, and there is absolutely no chance of freezer burn.
Take it from the freezer 24 hours before using, and allow to defrost slowly in the fridge, the Brie will then retain much of its original texture and taste.
Can be frozen for up to six months, after that it does start to deteriorate.
You are so right that Brie and all types of veggies make great sandwiches, and I love homemade croissants, not as difficult as it sounds, which have been filled with finely chopped ham or mushrooms, brie und rucola (rocket?) before baking.
Yum.
