The ancient ones called her Talol, Tahoma or Tacoma. The Puyallup tribe gave her the Lushootseed word Talol which means Mother of Waters. To some she was simply called White Mountain. I grew up knowing her as Mt. Rainier. To be back once again in the presence of her beauty is always a part of my thoughts. Mt. Rainier is calling to me to come home.

There was another legend about Mt. Rainier that I had forgotten about. After one of my brothers read the article, he asked me if I remembered the story of the plane that crashed up there. When we were kids we thought that one of the peaks of the mountain was the tail of the plane, buried in the glacier.

I do not know where that story originated from. I do remember now that it was quite spooky to us kids at the time. Thinking that a whole plane with people on it was buried up there where no one could reach it.

Just a bit of nostalgia...

Ok - I got my brothers involved in Folklore now. My younger brother reminded me about the story of the Abominable Snowman living up there on Mt. Rainier. eek I do not remember if that was just my four brothers teasing us or if it was a local legend.

I will have to check that out. wink

Well...I did not find anything about Yeti living on Mt. Rainier -- but I did find this:

The Kenneth Arnold UFO sighting was an incident on June 24, 1947, where private pilot Kenneth Arnold spotted a string of nine, shiny, mostly disc-like unidentified flying objects flying past Mount Rainier at then unheard of supersonic speeds that Arnold clocked at a minimum of 1,200 miles an hour.

I think Big Foot may wander around the lower foothills of the mountain.

Last time I visited Mt. Rainier was in 1973 with my father. We drove up to Paradise Valley and had lunch. It was a gorgeous day, but so chilly. The scenic views from up there are beautiful.

You are so very welcome, Rosie. Thank you for subscribing to my newsletter and reading my article.

I wish I could take you up to Tacoma so you could see Mt. Rainier in person. The beauty and size of it is just unbelievable and profound. Every time I see it, when I visit family up there, it is like the first time and I can hardly believe what I am seeing.
