Tonight on Masterpiece Mystery (PBS) we see the first of three episodes with Aurelio Zen, the Italian police detective created by best selling novelist Michael Dibdin.

Zen is a murder squad detective who is closing in on 40 and now living with his mother after his marrage failed.

Tonight's episode is called Vendetta (based on Dibdin's second book in the series), and has Zen up against a killer who is seeking revenge on the cops who helped put him away.

He is also investigating the murder of a billionair construction magnate - Zen seems to be the only one who wants to know the truth about the killing.

This series looks like it will be a pretty good one. Aurelio Zen, an Italian murder squad detective, puts his all into his job. He is a flawed character, but it is not difficult to start rooting for him. The actor who plays Zen, Rufus Sewell, is riveting to watch.

The second and third installments air July 24 and 31, 2011. You can find further information about Zen at Masterpiece Mystery on PBS.
