On June 14, 2011 The Lumbee Nation inaugurated Sharon Hunt as the first woman to serve as Tribal Chairperson.

She was first elected to Tribal Council in 2005. Having served on and chaired several committees, she was elected to serve as Vice-Chair by the Council earlier this year. The former Chairperson resigned in May due to health reasons, and Chairwoman Hunt will serve until a special election is held.

This is encouraging news. I so admire women who can take on leadership roles.

I would love to learn more about the Lumbee Nation.

great strides! I read of a tribal leader(have to go dig in my notes for exacts)who said that the native peoples can certainly remember and honor the old ways, but that it would be prudent to also stay current with the newer ways as well.

Dawn, that is so true, yet so hard to do. It's much like staddling two planets! On the Tribal Grounds, the most annoying sound for me is a cell phone ringing. But then, it's so nice to whip out a credit card to buy something special.

It's a balancing act to be innovative with the "new," while protecting and continuing the "old."

Haha, I get annoyed when my own cell rings...especially someone elses at inappropriate moments. That would be the key, I think, is the balance with regard for both. Of course, now I'm racking my brain trying to find where I read that....
