State department statistics claim that as many as 100,000 people in the US are enslaved - and, worldwide, that number may reach 27 million.

The Trafficking Victims Protection Act was passed eleven years ago - human trafficking is a crime; there are agencies to address domestic and international issues; strict penalties were created; and the State Department's Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking Persons was founded.

In June of this year (2011), the Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act of 2011 was introduced by Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont with the goal of making necessary changes to the existing laws.

Contact your members of Congress to call for the passage of this bill - it would create technical assistance programs for foreign governments, promote the National Human Trafficking Resource Center and create grants for local and state governments....

(I received an email from Jewish Women International about this issue and thought I'd pass it along)
