Hello Fellow Children's Writers!

Is that red face the way you feel when someone criticizes your work? This article will help you select someone who can provide you with positive and negative feedback without killing your feelings or your story.

Who's Your Best Critic?

Happy Writing on this rainy Sunday evening!

Best Wishes,
Annamaria

Hi Annamaria:

You are so right, it is important to feel "comfortable" with any feedback you may receive.

GREAT site smile

My best critic was my writing critique group. We had a group that used a private forum as a place to post items for review and critiques. Almost all of us would read an item and make comments in our copy (usually using Word's tracking feature) without looking at the other critiques.

The value of that is if only one person tells me they found one character unlikable and two other people said they thought that character was funny and a great addition to the story, well then that means one thing. But if all three reviewers say that this one character was annoying, then I know something has to change.

In terms of feeling anger, well we had the guideline to always start with what you liked about a story. Secondly, since we were all getting our own stuff reviewed, of course, we knew it isn't always what you say, but how you say it and so we made our suggestions carefully.

Hi, Anne

I really enjoyed reading your comments about your writing critique group. I like the process and "unwritten rules" your group was using. Also looked at your "Learn Spanish Through Stories" website...very nice!

Best Wishes,
Annamaria

My dother is my regular reader and best critic. I trust the most the opinion of my children.

It's fabulous if you have family members who can give you feedback but don't be afraid to take your work to writing groups or other writers who know how to give careful constructive criticism.

Best,
Annamaria
