What book are you reading right now?

I'm reading The Last Tsar which is very interesting and I am learning a lot.

Tell us what is occupying your reading time.

I just recently read a book called "Colonists of Sale" a good book about indentured servitude in 17th and 18th century colonial America. I learned a lot.

I'm reading 1000 Years of Annoying the French which is both very funny and informative. Not just about Britain and France either, but America comes into sometimes too.

It's certainly not widely known that Dom Perignon was trying to stop the champagne from going fizzy because it was making the bottles explode. An Englishman discovered what's now called the methode Champenoise for getting the wine to fizz in a controlled way. And English glass-making came to the rescue with sturdy glass bottles that could hold it safely.

I noted on a recent post books I am currently reading. I am posting here to recommend an author of popular histories, Mike Dash.

I have read three of his books, "Tulipomania" (about the boom in speculation in tulip bulbs), "Satan's Circus" (crime in Manhattan at the turn of the 20th century, think "Gangs of New York"), and "First Family" (founding of the mafia in the U.S.) . All read very well and were marked by what seemed to me to be very good primary source research.

He has written a half-dozen or so books. I recommend you give him a read.

I'm re-reading a book on the women pilots in Russia during WWII for a research paper. The book is: Night Witches by Bruce Myles. Plus, I have on order (from the interlibrary loan) A Dance with Death on the same subject.
