This week features one of my kids' most favorite crafts: salt dough clay! We have a growing collection of clay animals, clay food, and other creations around our house. They never get tired of doing this!

Years ago, when I made salt dough ornaments for sale, I found that rye flour made a nice pliable dough that baked well. A little dishwashing detergent helps keep it from drying out too fast and it makes it pliable.

Interesting- thanks for the tip! I don't normally have rye flour in the house but it would give me an excuse to buy some.

Kim, I think that the book that I used for my recipe mentioned rye. I don't usually have it around, either. But it did make a superior dough that didn't crack as much. When you do this stuff for money, cracking goes beyond bad! Every cracked piece has to be redone, and time is money!
