There's a new article up on the Biology site - Antibiotic Resistance

"Antibiotic resistance has become a world-wide health problem. Nearly all significant bacterial infections in the world are becoming resistant to commonly used antibiotics. The misuse of antibiotics helps create resistant microorganisms that can cause new and hard-to-treat infections."

Read the article and then come on back here and share your thoughts!

I agree completely - I am always hearing from people that they are taking antibiotics for things which are clearly not appropriate - because they pushed their doctor into giving them the antibiotics. Why do doctors give into this kind of pressure?

It would be fairly scary if all the things we currently treat with antibiotics became resistant to them.

One of my girls has MRSA and it never ceases to amaze me that her (used to be) pediatrician would try to give her anti-biotics for every little sniffle!

I live in fear every day of her having an infection and not being able to overcome it so treatment of little illnesses with high-powered meds is out of the question!

As far as why doctors give into pressure from their patients to be prescribed anti-biotics? I would have to guess that they just throw what they want at them to get them out of their office quickly rather than taking the time to educate them.

We are already on that slippery slope, Lisa. You are so right; it is scary.
