My aunt has this dirt strip in front of her house that's about a foot wide, a foot deep, and ten feet long, she'd love to plant roses in. I actually think there were roses there about 20 years ago, but now it's just an empty strip of dirt.

Are there any kinds of roses that would do well in a bit of a narrow space?

Hi Deanna, have you looked into "minature" or "climbing" roses?

Angela, this is a good idea. I think she'd like the climbing roses. Adding a bit of a trellis would give her a bit more privacy too.

That would be so pretty!

Awesome, and let us know if it works and post some pictures if you can. Right now I am trying to be PATIENT about starting a NEW garden at the rental duplex we just moved into. Yes, I have ALWAYS started a garden with clippings I take from the OLD garden but since being laid off in 2008, got out of this routine. And with sharing the place with folks that just don't care about the place, I am leery about investing my time and cash right now. But I LOVE seeing other's gardens and projects.

Hello AJS and all,

Roses need root space to grow and will do well in pots at least about knee-deep high if that makes sense. Why is the space only a foot deep? Concrete underneath or can it be dug down to knee deep high? They also need sun.

Anyway, there is a featured article currently on the Container Gardening site on growing roses in a container which may suit you to read but I will add a few notes here too on growing a climbing or rambling rose.

Attach the strong trellis about three inches away from the wall, do not prune your rose until all the trellis is covered (just a brief tidy up but no pruning), just keep tying the growing branches accordingly and when tying your stems preferably use old stockings or tights or t-shirt strips or similar. Avoid using plastic cable ties or flexible garden wire.

I end this post with some ideas for roses - amongst my favourites are ...

PINK - Polka
- Cecile Brunner

RED - Satchmo
- Lady Penelope

YELLOW - Lemon Meringue
- Golden Shower

WHITE - Pascali
- Iceberg

APRICOT - Just Joey (see my avatar for colour)
Warm Welcome

BI-COLOURS- Double delight (deep pink edges cream inside)

... but there are so many roses to choose from that you may just go to the nursery and fall in love with your own. I do that all the time.

Cheers now

Thanks so much for the suggestions Lestie laugh I'm not sure why the dirt is only a foot deep. Weird, huh.

My aunt loves roses laugh And she loves to look at them at the nursery. I think that will be one her favorite things - just picking out roses laugh
