Hello Lynnski,
Yes there are several aids online for needle tatting from the ball thread. Begin by comparing these graphics illustrations.
http://www.greenfuzzer.com/rhtech.htmlThe first illustration is the method you have been using, a cut piece of thread which when slid off the needle automatically forms into a ring.
The second illustration shows the ball thread still attached and used to wrapped the ds onto the needle to make a chain.
The third illustration shows the ball thread still attached and used to wrap the ds for a ring.
Save the fourth illustration for later.
http://hhtatting.com/beads.htmSave the info on beading for later. Note that in these photos the thread which goes off camera to the left is coming from the ball.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9uXq0gSkUOA&feature=shareNext watch Rexie's video. Here the thread from the ball is pulled through the eye of the needle, at least 1/2 yd. Allow a 10" loop to sag from the needle as you bring the ball thread up to the mid point of the needle and use that thread going off to the left to the ball thread to wrap the ds onto the needle.
As you slide the ds off the needle this time you must keep a finger in the loop to keep it from closing too soon. As the loop tightens up, put the needle through the loop and bring the needle back to the right. Slide the ds off and form the ring.
Follow the same direction to make a chain except, at the end, do not put the needle through the loop. As you slide the ds off the needle it forms a straight or slighty curved. line.
