Schools have meetings on children for many reasons, and sometimes parents are not invited. HOWEVER, if it is an IEP meeting, a meeting to plan or change an IEP, the parent MUST be invited. Also, the school must give the parent 10 days notice, unless the parent wishes to waive the 10 day notice. Many parents do that when an emergency meeting needs to take place.

I advise the parent in question to call the Director of Special Education's office and ask for a copy of her parent rights. Tell them that she does not think that it is a good idea to meet without her input. Also, follow up with a written or e-mail note. This helps establish a paper trail, just in case there needs to be a legal recourse. I also recommend that parents read wrightslaw.com. They are special ed advocates. That site has a lot of information.
