This is another article identifying some free distance learning for people who who want or need to learn about a subject but do not want to attend formal classes and for those on a tight budget that has no room for extra spending. On the GCF website there are many practical subjects to learn about.

The only issue I had with the ones I looked into is not getting something saying I completed the course. Are there any that do? I would love to get some medical training added to my resume. I do Office Support and finding at age 52, that with the recession, the area I live in is basically run by the hospitals. And they can now be picky about who they hire = forget "on the job training" or allowing someone to learn as they go. Thanks smile

Hi Angela

You are right. There is very little that is available in the way of free online courses that also offer a certificate or other indication that you have completed a course. I usually suggest that people use the free courses for their personal learning and then they can list the skills they have learned from the course and they would be able to talk about what they have learned when in an interview but it is difficult to find free courses that offer proof that you have completed them.

I did find a site that offers a few health and safety courses and some "Health Literacy" courses. They seem like they are really basic courses but you could check to see if they are anything you might be interested in here:
Online Health Literacy Training Courses and Certification

I did read a review that stated that this site provides good basic info. but I did not go to any of the training myself yet to see what it is like. This site does provide certification but I'm not sure if it would be of any use to you nor do I know exactly how it works. The review site was not interested in certification at all. He only reviews free sites and feels that the value is in gaining the knowledge rather than getting a certificate.

If you get a chance to check it out, let me know what you think. I will also be going back when I get the time to find out more about that site. Hope it is helpful for you.

Hi Elizabeth:

I just visited the site and will keep checking back to see if they add any "medical coding" or similar office support info to the site. I am not into actually having to deal with the patients.

Thanks for taking the time to do this for me smile

Another idea for people who are low on funds is to seek out the scholarships that are out there, that way they can take the classes that give them the required credit and get assistance to pay for them.

That is very true Lisa.
There are a lot of scholarships available for people if they start checking. There are some that are offered by the government but there are lots of private scholarships too. Many of them are never used because no one applies for them. It takes some searching but it may well be worth it. Sometimes even the company you are working for or the union if you are in one offers scholarships for educational courses. May be worth checking Angela.
