I've been catching up on musicals and classic movies for a while now and my favorites are:

Damn Yankees
Gypsy
Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (Jane Russell is great in this)
Auntie Mame
Pajama Game

Are you a musicals or classic movie watcher? What movies do you recommend?

I love musicals! The Sound of Music is my favorite! I also love; Grease, Dirty Dancing, Cinderella, and really any Disney animated classic. We used to sing all night long when we arranged flowers for Valentine's day and during Christmas-time in my friend's flower shop. Miss that! Now the only thing I get to sing in public is "Happy Birthday"! hahaha!!!

All those are great. I listened to the Little Mermaid Broadway Musical and it was great! Poor Unfortunate Souls is such a great song!

Oooo... The Little Mermaid is wonderful! I love Madame Butterfly too. I have no idea what they are saying, but LOVE the feelings I get from it! I have the soundtrack (like, 5 CDs) and love them all...weird; I know. Footloose is another favorite, and also love the soundtrack from Crique du Soleil's "Allegria". I guess it's the emotions they invoke, just by "feeling" the music, even though I don't understand the words. Moving, ya know?

My favorite is The Apple Tree, a trilogy with three story ideas tied together by the theme that you may get what you want, only to find that it wasn't what you wanted after all.

Alan Alda, of MASH fame, sang the lead in the original stage play.

One of my all time musicals is Funny Girl with Barbra Streisand and Omar Sharif. Her song at the end of the movie makes me cry with her every time I see it.

Hi Monica,
You might be sorry that you asked (or just that I replied) when you see my list as just prior to moving to Mexico I bought about 54 musical videos. We didn't have Internet for the first two years so I watched them over and over and over...

So, here's my list of "favorite musicals" in no particular order:
Wizard of Oz
Carousel
For Me and My Gal
Top Hat
Singin' in the Rain
State Fair
Grease
Damn Yankees
Meet Me in St. Louis
White Christmas
South Pacific
Hello Dolly
Yankee Doodle Dandy
The King and I
Guys and Dolls
Show Boat
Annie Get Your Gun
West Side Story
My Fair Lady
Oklahoma
Holiday Inn
High Society
Thoroughly Modern Millie
The Music Man
The Producers
Fame
Babes on Broadway
Brigadoon
There's No Business Like Show Business
Fiddler on the Roof

Not asked but... Judy Garland, Gene Kelly, and Robert Preston would be my favorite musical performers.

Thanks for all the ideas! Working my way down your list Les but I do remember a couple of those from when I was a kid but want to watch them again. I love anything that has singing and dancing in it even if it's bad I'll still watch it.

Almost any movie with Gene Kelly is worth watching. I also really like the 1962 film directed by Gene Kelly called "Gigot". It is a wonderful movie. It is Jackie Gleason's greatest acting performance of a lonely mute who learns to love a young girl and try to care for her as if she was his daughter. It is a funny, but very warm and heart-felt film. Gigot - online
