I was thinking recently about green issues and women's issues. On one hand they seem to be fairly disparate - an entirely separate groups of areas. But are they really? Are there areas where women's issues and green issues intertwine and helping one helps the other?

Hmmm...this is interesting to think about. The first thought that came to mind for me is that women are still the primary caretakers and food-growers or food-purchasers for their families, all around the world. And so they tend to be the ones thinking the most about food sources, in terms of things being organic, sustainable, etc. They are also most connected to household refuse, and therefore most connected to things like recycling, reusing, composting, etc. In that sense, I think we are very directly connected, on the household level. When I start thinking on a more 'macro' level, I don't know how much is directly linked to women's issues...

Dear Lisa -

Those are some great points. I think especially with the organic, sustainable food, women are often the primary drivers in a household for those issues.

I know many women who really want to eat cage-free chicken and organic vegetables but they can't afford the items in their budget. That's a real shame - those foods used to be the "normal" foods that everyone ate!

Are there suggestions on how to work on a budget that allows those healthier food choices, both for the consumers and for the environment?
