Philly Beer Geek is an annual competition during Philly Beer Week in June. The winner is chosen by a panel of "illustrious celebrity judges" who are big names in the world of beer. The Philly Beer Geek is chosen as the one who shows the greatest knowledge & passion for beer, especially Philadelphia Beer. He/she wins over a thousand dollars worth of prizes, a plaque, and the title.

The winner of the 2010 competition, Steve Hawk, has done lots of cool things during his reign. His sponsor threw a Beer Geek Barbecue for him, and he went around with a mini keg on his back, pouring little cups of beer to the crowd, and collected money for Pancreatic Cancer Research. He did this a few times during the year.

He started a nano brewery, and will be at a festival this year - in a king's throne - and attendees will get to ask questions that will stump him. He's also written three articles about beer for Draught Lines Magazine.

What would you do if you were chosen as Philly Beer Geek?

Philly Beer Geek Semi-Finals and Finals will be at Manayunk Brewery & Restaurant on Main Street Manayunk in 2011.

I saw a few of last year's competitors at the Brewer's Plate event, and they can't wait to try again! Great judges this year, too!

Steve Hawk, Philly Beer Geek 2010 and founder of the ALEiens and Local Nano.
Don Russell, Co-Founder and Director of Philly Beer Week and author of Joe Sixpack's Philly Beer Guide and Christmas Beer.
Doug Marchakitus, Head Brewer of Manayunk Brewery.
Steve Mashington, Head of Operations at Yards Brewery, Philadelphia.
Tom Kehoe, Owner of Yards Brewery, Philadelphia.
Gary Monterrosso, Host of the show Still Crazy after All These Beers.
Scoats, Owner of the Grey Lodge Pub, Philadelphia.
Marnie Old, wine sommelier and author (with Sam Calagione) of He Said Beer, She Said Wine.
Rocco DiCicco and Jon Nitka, the Beers of Legend Team and authors of Winter Beers I and Beers of Legend Philly Beer Week.
Joe Gunn, Co-Owner of Jose Pistolas, Philadelphia, and inventor of Joe Gunn's Comedy Hour (during Philly Beer Week).
Casey Hughes, Head Brewer at Flying Fish Brewing Company, Cherry Hill, NJ.
Jack Curtin, beerwriter of the Atlantic Ale Trail at Celebrator Beer News.
...and possibly a few more surprises!

Note, 3 of our judges have been recipients of a national writers award, the Brewers Association Beer Journalism Award: Lew Bryson, Don Russell, and Marnie Old.

Whew!

Do you burst into spontaneous verse when drinking an awesome beer? You should be Philly Beer Geek 2011!

The 3-step process to beer fame and beer fortune are:
1. Win a preliminary round at a participating Philadelphia beer-centric business;
2.Wow the famous beer judges in the semifinal round;
3. Dominate the other finalists during the showdown during Philly Beer Week.

If it were easy, it wouldnt be worth the title! www.phillybeergeek.com
