New article up: Biology Nomenclature!

Why do scientists name organisms the way they do? The system of binomial nomenclature is very important, as it enables people of all locations and languages to discuss living things more easily.

Check out the article and then let us know your thoughts about binomial nomenclature!

As a follow-up to last week's introduction to Binomial Nomenclature, a new article entitled "Binomial Nomenclature - Fun with Names" has been posted.

Check it out and see what you think about some of the fun and unusual names scientists have come up with using binomial nomenclature.

Then - come on back here and let us know what you think!

I think it is necessary to use a Binomial for all the plants and animals, because it is the easiest way of identification of a organism in different Country, Binomial is universal identification name of any organism.

Yes being a biology student i am aware of the Binomial Nomenclature. It reminds me of an incident that makes me laugh whenever I recall it. I was in school and I was in 12th standard. My teacher was checking test papers of a 6th standard in which a girl wrote answers as: Biological name of
Rose=Rosa Indica and
Cat= Cata Indica. (actual biological name of cat is Felis Domestica)
Lolzz when our teacher told us about this answer we went laughing very hard.

LOL - Thanks for sharing that Kaycee!

I know over the years I've had a hard time proving to my own children that things they think are all different animals (as in the examples I used in the article) are really just the same animal with different common names!

It's kind of like the way that, in the US, the words soda, cola and pop are all the same thing (a soft drink), but with different names in different parts of the country. My family moved around when I was young, and I would often run into this sort of thing. So, of course, imagine that if there's that sort of situation within the same country, how many difficulties arise amongst the different countries!
