Are faeries real? Some say not -- yet I cannot imagine a garden without them.

Hi Phyllis, nice to see you again.

What is the difference in the spellings of faerie and fairy?

Beautiful article, when I was a child and used to wander freely in our country side, I often imagined fairies in the woods and fields. I can't say I have actually met one, but Morgan la Fay was one of my favorite characters in the King Arthur stories, especially the Mists of Avalon that both Asha and I have read.

Hi Linda, thanks for stopping by.

The spelling 'faerie' is from the old French language. 'Fairy' became more popular in the United States because of the Disney animated movies, that is how they spelled it. Both spellings mean the same. I often tend to use old world language when I write on mythology -- it adds more mystique.

Mists of Avalon is one of my favorite Arthurian reads. I have read the book at least four times over the years. In this book, Morgan le Fay is given a softer, more caring nature than other Arthurian legends portray her. (le Fay = the faerie; fay = derived from late Latin 'fata', a guardian or tutelary spirit).

I am glad you enjoyed the article.
