Hi Phyllis, promised you some more Bauernregeln, farming folklore, from Germany and here we are, its March already so three more country sayings to start off the new month.

Wenn in Maerz die Kuckuck viel schrein, kann man sich auf den Fruehling freun.
When the cuckoos screech a lot in March, one can look forward to spring.

Hasen die springen, Lerchen die singen, warden sicher den Fruehling bringen.
Rabbits leaping, Nightingales singing, will certainly bring the spring

And in just a few days, from 3rd to 8th March, it is Mardi Gras in Germany, Fasnacht, Karnavel or Fasching as it is called, so here is one 'bauernregel' just for the next week or sohowever looking out of the window at the moment it looks as if the Fasnacht schoen bit is going to be MIA!

Fasnacht schoen, Bluemchen bald stehn
If Mardi Gras has good weather, flowers will soon bloom

Hmmm!

Old farmers say:

- If the spring in windy, expect a cool summer.

- If it is a dry spring, it will be a wet summer.

Hi Phyllis

The month is only five days old and we have already had sun with very warm temperatures, thunderstorms, rain, cloud and high winds, so this farmers motto certainly works here at the moment

April, April, der macht, was er will.

April, April, it does what it wants.

Well that is for sure, Francine. We have had snow, rain, bitter cold, wind storms and now sunshine and temps in the high 50's and 60's in the last two weeks. April started out very cold and now is quite nice during the day, very cold at night.

Proverb from Michigan farmer:

Michigan winds are fiercest in the spring. Why, just last year, the wind knocked one of our mountains over into a valley. Folks woke up the next day to find themselves living on a plain.

Some Bauernregeln for May Phyllis, which certainly started out as a beautiful day yesterday.

Schwrmt die Biene schon im Mai, gibt es ganz bestimmt viel Heu.

When the bees are already swarming in May, the harvest will bring plenty of hay.

And at the moment there are bees and even butterflies out and about here, so hopefully the next one does not prove accurate this year.

Die erste Liebe und der Mai, gehen selten ohne Frost vorbei.

First love and May seldom continue without frost(so problem free as far as the first love goes).

I love it!

We are having bees and butterflies starting to come around. Our nights are still fairly cold.

If the oak is out before the ash then we are in for a splash,
But if the ash is out before the oak we are in for a soak.

June already Phyllis, so here is the piece of June folklore from Germany

Soll gedeihen Korn und Wein, mu im Juni Regen sein.
If the corn and grape harvest are to thrive, then there has to be rain in June.

And as New Potatoes are just appearing in the shops here, Yummy, thought that this oft, and very unkind, phrase would be topical.

Der duemmste Bauer hat the groessten Kartoffel.
The most stupid farmer has the biggest potatoes.
(Perhaps that is where the word dumb originates?)

The average German used to eat about 600 lbs of potatoes a year in the early 1900s, over a pound and a half a day per person, so the farmers might have been thought of as dumb but it sounds as if they were certainly successful.

Thanks for the delightful information, Francine. I can hardly believe it is already June - almost half our year now experienced.

My family loves potatoes. At every potluck there are potato salads, scalloped potatoes, potato au gratin, potato/sausage/peppers/onions dish. We love it! I once fixed a German potato salad and everyone loved it!

I wish I had my own yard to grow potatoes.

The month of May was very radical as far as the weather goes. We kept switching around to all four seasons on one month. We never knew how to dress each day. It would snow, hail, or rain in the mornings, warm up by lunch time and a few days of thunder in the afternoons.

I will have to go search for some summer weather proverbs to share with you. I do remember that if the wasps build their nests in the open, we will have a dry summer.

July already Phyllis, so here is this month's Farmers Wisdom.

Wenn die Ameisen im Juli ihre Haufen hher machen, so folgt ein strenger Winter

When the ants make their hills higher during July, the coming winter will be severe.

Well not sure what is happening where you are, but here, although there are masses of ants all over the place, at least for the moment their hills are so small they are hardly noticeable.

Perhaps they are saving their energy for a mad spurt at the end of the month.

Thank you, as always, Francine for sharing your proverb with us.

Over here we have not yet seen any ant hills yet. They must be somewhere though because we are getting the large red ants around the patio.

I love your new Avatar! Castles are one of my favorite interests.

Happy you like the avatar Phyllis, a good fairy helped me to get it up thereotherwise it probably would have taken me as long to succeed as building the castle, Neuschwanstein the Disney castle. That took 23 years, and King Ludwig died when only 15 of the 200 rooms for his dream home were completed, although he did manage to live in it for a whole 172 days.

Imagine trying to drag all the construction materials up the mountainside. Just after walking up it to visit the place I was exhausted for hours. tired

Oh my gosh! You have been up there? It is so beautiful. Thank you for the information on it, Francine.

That is sad that King Ludwig died before his castle was completed.

Here is another proverb for you:

Thunder in the morning, all day storming -
Thunder at night is the travelers delight

Oh have you got a treat in store Beetlemess, you will love it. smile

As a Gothic revival Neuschwansteins design might have had nothing to do with the 19th century when it was built, but it is/was an amazing flight of fancy. Quite unforgettable.

You will quite probably have snow at that time of year and a mist that encircles the castle in narrow bands, which of course makes it appear even more as if it had just popped out of a book of fairy tales.

There are horse drawn wagons, no cars allowed, but plan in good shoes and a vitamin packed breakfast if you are going to walk up to the castle.

Have you been over here before, and will you be staying in Munich, or close to the castle in Schwangau or Fussen?

No dew on the grass at night is a sign of rain.

Deanna and Francine, did either of you see that movie, titled '(something) In April'? It was about a group of women who all paid their own part to rent a castle somewhere in Europe. It is a really good movie. Anyway, I have always wanted to do that. If I could spend a month in an ancient castle with dear friends I would be so happy. What a delightful experience that would be.

PS: Francine, Beetlemess is away for the long weekend. I am sure he will answer your post when he returns. He is very good about replying. smile

Phyllis, I don't know of that movie! I agree though, it would be an amazing experience to share a castle with good friends! Seems it would be pretty inspiring too!

The film was Enchanted April Phyllis, and yes wasnt it super. It was at the beginning of the nineties.oh dear that sounds a long time agoso the chaotic eighties were not long gone and this film was just such a change of pace, and era. For those few hours I got completely caught up in it, it was genuinely enchanting.

That castle was in Italy, and it is still possible to hire castles in Germany, a bit like a holiday villa. Not too sure about other European countries these days, but probably.

And of course many German castles are hotels also, or at least part of the building is used as one, and in general they are not as expensive as most hotels.

Perhaps we should have a BellaOnline meet in a castle one year. cool

When my eldest son was very young we didn't live in Germany, but we used to stay in a small and really old castle whenever we were passing through the country to Austria or Italy. There he used to frighten himself by peering down the castle well where there was a skeleton lyingapparently being thrown down a well was a punishment in the good old days.

No, it wasnt a real skeleton of course, it just fitted perfectly to their very well equipped former dungeon. However he did not believe this even though we told him, and used to get very upset that months would have passed and no one had bothered to rescue the remains and bury them somewhere.

It would be glorious to have a BellaOnline gathering in a castle in Germany! I would probably not be able to attend, but, I can dream.

'Enchanted April' was a wonderful movie. I know a few people who have families back in Germany who live in castles. They have their own little apartment and share the kitchen downstairs, which is huge with the big old stone fireplace they still use for some cooking.

That is a delightful story about your son and his concern for the lonely skeleton.

Watch those small cumulus (puffy) clouds in the morning or early afternoon. If the rounded tops of these clouds, which have flat bases, grow higher than the cloud's width, then there's a chance of a thunderstorm forming.

We still have not had a good thunderstorm here. Just a few rumbles here and there.

I learned the same atmospheric readings as:

Red sky at night,
Sailor's Delight.
Red Sky at morning,
Sailor's take warning.

The two actually say the same thing.

Hi Phyllis, could not find an interesting farmers proverb for August, perhaps because it was a month when farmers way back then were too busy working to be thinking about sage pieces of wisdom.

Harvesting of one thing or another is beginning all around at the moment, so this is something vaguely related to both farming and life, both then and now:

Sowing is not as difficult as reaping.

Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe, German poet, novelist and dramatist, 1749-1832

Yeah - I guess it would have been odd to see a farmer back in the days during harvest time sitting at a table with pen and ink trying to think of a proverb to write. smile

With autumn on its way there are red skies quite often at the moment, so thought to begin this month I would add a popular German rural saying which you were recently discussing on another site Phyllis, and that is:

Abendrot verspricht dem Bauern Lohn und Brot, dahingegen Morgenroete verheisst dem Bauern arge Noete.

A red sky in the evening promises farmers money and bread, but a red sky in the morning foretells irritation and problems.

Or in other words:

Red sky at night, shepherds delight, red sky in the morning, shepherds warning.

Hi Francine,

I guess this proverb is famous around the world, said in different ways. smile

Our family always said:

Red sky at night, sailor's delight. Red sky in the morn, sailor's take warn.

Thanks for sharing -- I enjoy your proverbs.
