I'm the editor of the meditation site and I learned to play the harmonium in order to lead chanting groups in kirtan. The words in kirtan are in Sanskrit an ancient root language. Maybe you'd enjoy reading more on my experience.

Kirtan - Chanting Meditation

Here is a photo of me playing the harmonium:

Indian culture is rich in it's instruments and the harmonium is just one of them ...

Do you play an Indian instrument?

Wow, Susan that is impressive! My son is currently taking tabla lessons, my father was so inspired -- that he started taking tabla lessons too :-).

I would LOVE to take sitar lessons, maybe once my son is a little older & I have TIME!

But that's great Susan!

When I was about 9 I began piano lessons and my mother wanted me to learn the accordian, which I didn't have time for. Then as a high school grad gift I was given an autoharp. So, when I was about 30 and began kirtan with a yoga group it was not hard to play the harmonium. When I moved to Holland in my early 50s one of the first purchases I made was a harmonium. Music shops thrive in Amsterdam. I love chanting and playing an instrument whether harmonium, piano or clapping rhythms with the tambourine as I did while teaching rhythmic dance for many years.
