Servus Angela
Well Hello seems a good place to start, and believe it or not that is probably a bit more complicated, because to a certain extent it depends upon the area of Germany one is in, and also how well you know the person you are greeting.
There is a simple Hello or Hi yes they are taken from English and especially used by the very young, although they have begun to spread across the board, and Hello can cover most situations.
But more commonly used are:
Guten Tag! .............Hello! Used across Germany Tag!.................... Hi! Used across Germany Gruess Gott! (God Bless You).....Hello! In southern Germany and Austria, and used at any time of day Servus!.................Hello and also Goodbye. The most popular informal greeting in Bavaria, Austria and the German speaking area of Italy Gruess dich!............Hello! An informal Hello to someone you know well
Then there are:
Guten Morgen!...........Good Morning! Used across Germany Morgen!..................Morning! Used across Germany Guten Abend!............Good Evening! Used starting from that in between stage, when it is not quite afternoon and also not yet night time.
Gute Nacht!.............Good Night!
And saying Goodbye, well again because of the area and just how well you know the person then that can be just as interesting as Hello.
So Angela when your feet touch German soil you will be able to meet and greet with no problems at all.
Servus, Francine

Hi Farjana, I am such a hopeless case with these sort of things I am afraid.
Can you give me an idea where to find the Swap, Barter and Business forum please'.
You have probably guessed I have not managed to locate it so far.
