Deanna-
Love this story & your song (Stevie Nick's Rhiannon too).
I like this story because most Fairytales never prepare our girls for the other possibilities of love. Generally speaking, the Princess is loved by many (true for most of us), despised by one or very few (also true for most), and then rescued by a Prince (not so true).
In Rhiannon there are a few twists. In her 1st situation, Rhiannon pretty much saves herself (like most of us have to do), providing the prince with directions on how to manage the situation. This is often the tone of many marriages. It's a sort of balance that exists. Women are often the mind and the man the executor.
In the 2nd instance, while Rhiannon does not rescue herself. The person that comes to her aid is a farmer and his wife (1st the save and care for her child, 2nd they unite them, 3rd -thus- releasing Rhiannon).
Additionally, those that put her in the 2nd predicament are not people that despise her; they are her "loyal' servants that simply desire to save themselves. And, while Rhiannon's punishment is harsh, their's would certainly have been far worst.
Each of these lessons is often overlooked in most fairytales. I think that Rhiannon is a story well worth teaching our girls. It's also a great story for women. It's a chance to learn about our possibilities.
Thanks for sharing Deanna!
