I was messing around with creating a charter for 'my island' - my land, that I bought and live on, and came up with some ideas. I'd love help expanding this, and Lisa thought maybe others would like to create their own household charters!

Captain Jilly's island charter:

1 - you have to be honest on my island, but be nice about it.

2 - We all recycle, reuse and compost. We look for ways to use all our
resources before tossing old things or buying new ones

3 - we all want to live a serene life

4 - we all actively help each other reach our personal goals

5 - we will all focus on our own needs and that of our families *before* work

6 - we will not take on so much work that we cannot live our lives in
a happy, joyous way

7 - we support each other in having hobbies and non-work interests

8 - Education and Health Care are a given on this island. No one goes
hungry. We have clean water, soil and air

9 - We grow organic food and meat, share in the harvest, and barter
our skills across the island

10 - we use the tools of consensus to govern the island

1 1 - we are a non-denominational, liberal community

12 - we are kind to each other and animals

13 - We reserve the right to remove negative influences from the
island, with the possibility of reinstatement

14 - We reserve the right to have personal property among the areas of
community property

15 - everyone is expected to care for the community property

16 - All resources on the island are to be harvested sustainably

17 - We strive for the island to be self-sustaining from the mainland

What else do you guys think? What might i consider adding? What will you have on your island charters?

Those are amazing entries, Jilly, and I think this is a fantastic idea that we all should do for our own homes! We should create charters of how we want our "precious home world" to be run.

We are really blessed to have our homes - think of all the homeless people out there who would dream of such a luxury! We should treasure our homes and care for them

It's funny, one of the first things I thought to put on my charter is one I don't do in actual life.

1) My island is always open to friendly visitors, regardless of its state of mess or destruction. We welcome with open arms our friends to come and relax.

I really would like to be able to be more like that. I have these super-high expectations in my mind of what a home should look like to guests. Undoubtedly drilled into me by my mom. Here's an example of a restricting view that is over 20 years old - i.e. I've been an adult on my own since I was 18!! So I should be LONG free of another person's expectations about my own life.

Lisa, this is a great idea to have at home. With my family of 4, I could see how we'd really get into it! And it would be fun to know what my kids expected of their home beyond the rules set by me and my husband.
