Now that fall is coming to a close, we're bringing our few remaining herb plants inside to sit by the back window (rosemary, catnip etc). I am going to miss having fresh herbs from the garden. So I just bought myself a windowsill herb set for my office window -

I got it from Amazon, look for "Italian Herb Garden Trio". It has the soil, the seeds, everything. I just started it today. It has oregano, chives and basil.

Does anyone grow herbs on their windowsill in the winter months?

I love growing herbs inside for the winter but I am in the process of moving so will have to do it next year. I need to keep my herbs up higher in my home because my cats like to graze their way through the indoor garden. My one old 19 year cat actually will lay sprawled on my lemon balm if I let him. It certainly makes his fur smell lovely.

That is a very nice looking kit. I am so excited that I will have the ability to have a garden again. While I prepare my compost pile for the spring plantings, I think inside the kitchen I will grow oregano, chives, rosemary and mint.

I finally (FINALLY) realized how to overwinter my rosemary. Every year I'd grow it outside in containers, then bring it in late fall and promptly it would croak. This year is different. My rosemary (bless its heart) is actually sending out new shoots. The secret? Neglect. Well, benevolent neglect. I have always known that rosemary doesn't like to be over-watered, but who likes to see bone dry dirt, right? This year I just got busy and "forgot" to water. (I do water it, but sparsely. Maybe twice a month.) Works like a charm . . . go figure! Virginia

Sad story, I have never had a green thumb but I bought one of the herb growing kits. It was actually growing nicely, sparse but nicely....so I decided to move them from the window they were in because it was ice cold....and dropped all of the containers. They fell face down on the carpet. I tried to stick them back in but they're looking really bad right now...

Shoot I came on here to figure out what was now in that herb trio and I don't think it's that any more. It still has basil but I think the other two died out and I replanted them with ... what? They are small leaves, maybe thyme? I'll have to take a photo.

Growing winter herbs in Western Australia isn't a problem - it is our best growing time. Our problem is surviving the heat of summer. I moved most of my herbs to a little narrow strip down the side of the house where the plants are protected mostly from the full sun. I'll see how well they do this year. Last year my parsley was fried by the heat. Hopefully this year I'll still have some at the end of February.

I'm growing herbs on my sill right now. Its 8 degrees outside.

I have basil and tarragon, and pretty spurge (radium weed) that is known for effectively removing skin cancer...not melanoma though. I got the seeds from New Zealand
