Why are there so many ways to cite sources and why do different areas use them exclusively?

My history classes use Chicago. My general classes use AMA. My English classes use MLA.

Why can't one style work?

You got me LOL. We're not the only ones. Roomie goes to school at a traditional school (although all her classes are online this sememster) and she uses APA and MLA

It is kind of crazy, isn't it? You'd think they would have standardized on one method long ago. I hate trying to keep that stuff straight...

After working in a few different fields, I developed my own theory. The citations differ because they arose t meet the needs of certain industries. Science and journalism will often use APA. English teachers leave MLA, and it seems that the non-science writers will use it. Chicago kind of fit into both, and lets not get into all of the different ways legal writing can be cited! That makes the situation way more complex!
